Read an Interview with Matthew Paul
first in the office
my whistling echoes
up the stairwell
cafe alcove:
a baby hollers
into the hubbub
spring sleet
    the jaywalker
         only just making it
cowslips—
trousers on a line
at the funfair camp
the undertakers
loading the lilies—
river in spate
the tilted alder
toddlers meet
each other’s stare
Midsummer’s Day
the craneman commences
his long ascent
blue dragonflies
a boy with a
Hula Hoop
on every finger
         summer fete
the Punch and Judy Man
       losing his voices
tea break
the mechanic sweats
on a chair of tyres
slipping unnoticed
out of the house
last sunbeams
sweltering zoo:
a boy shows his lion
to the real thing
summer’s end
the hot dog vendor
prodding onions
the sculptor touches
               each piece
  in his retrospective
equinox
a family of refugees
feeding the ducks
the bistro chef
smoking out the back—
misty rain
home time
the office cleaners laugh
in a different tongue
tucking a roll-up
behind his ear
the harvest sun
autumn night
the duvet gathers
between us
the orienteers
stop to read their map—
pollarded oaks
losing at home…
the flick of a divot
in the linesman’s sprint
last off the train,
the blind man takes his time
to button up
ceaseless rain
the children pretend
to be Cybermen
thunderclouds…
an aproned butcher
takes his lunchtime stroll
       a smile
from a stranger—
     clouds full of snow
the one-man band
strums to no one
    swirling snow
winter sunrise
the pavement-sweeper
waits for me to pass
her deft hands
in the evening light
the colours of rhubarb
winter’s end
a bunch of postmen
freewheel into town
